On Kennedy's withdrawal

I'll be the first to admit that when I initially heard that the Princess of Camelot was vying for now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's (I like the sound of that) vacated Senate seat my initial liberal reaction was blind glee. I was like "Oh, that's perfect...she'll be great." But when my partner asked me why I felt that way the best I could come up with was "........eerrr, she's a Kennedy."
The only qualification I could think of offhand was that she was the spawn of a President that once inspired a nation before his tragic end.
As the weeks dragged on I took more time to research exactly what she has done in the course of her career. I will definitely give her credit for what she has done to raise private funds for the New York City public schools. And although I've never read her books, (The Right to Privacy [1995], In Our Defense: The Bill of Rights In Action [1991], I'm aware she has received great praise for these works of literature. I also wholeheartedly agree with her stance on same-sex marriage, gun control and abortion.
But beyond that....
Was she really the most qualified New Yorker to fill this Senate seat?
The answer is clearly no.
In my opinion she is essentially where she is today because of who she is and who she knows. I'm afraid if we start handing out high ranking political positions to people like that we are flirting with aristocracy.
I have come to respect NY Governor David Paterson over the last few months. He rose to his current position after a rather disgusting and foolish display of poor judgement by Eliot Spitzer and it seems he has really stepped to the plate.
We are being told now that Gov. Paterson will make his decision public by Sat, Jan. 24. I have great faith and trust in him that he will make the right decision.
His decision will have an impact on me as I work towards returning to my home state of New York in the near future.
Keep up the good work Caroline......preferably in the private sector.
